Italian Tax Identification Number
The Italian Tax Identification Number or Tax ID Code (Codice Fiscale) is an individual tax identification code made up of 16 alphanumeric characters uniquely devised from an individual’s name, date and place of birth. All those living in Italy are required to have their own Tax ID Code. This Code cannot replace the Identity Document, but it allows Public Administrations to easily exchange information in Italy. It is often used in dealings with the Public Administration and Local Authorities and for any financial transaction, e.g. the provision of scholarships, opening a bank account, applying for the National Healthcare Service - NHS, renting a flat, buying an Italian mobile phone card, etc.
If you are an EU or a non - EU student, you do need to apply for it. It is free of charge.
You can obtain the Tax ID Code applying for it at the Italian Embassy or Consulate of the country where you are living, as outlined in the Invitation Letter prepared by the Campus Management and Front Office of IMT School in order to request your Study Visa. For the application process, you must present the appropriate request form together with a copy of your identity document to the competent Consular Office. Please check the Consulate website in the country you reside to obtain more information.
You can contact the Campus Management and Front Office of the IMT School, which will help you out with filling the application form (AA4/8) and submitting it to the local Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate), which will issue your Tax ID Code. EU citizens can apply for a Tax ID Code with their ID card. Extra-EU citizens, instead, can apply with their passport, a valid visa and their Residence Permit or proof that the relevant application has been submitted.
For additional information, please visit the Revenue Agency's website. If you lose your Italian Tax ID Code or if your card is stolen, a replacement can be requested at the local Revenue Agency Office.
