Failure of quasi-brittle materials and uncertainty-informed reliability-based design optimization of concrete structures
Damage and failure analysis of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and composite materials are still challenging problems, though great progress has been made in the past over 100 years. Simultaneously, randomness exists widely in engineering problems due to uncertainty of structural parameters and external excitations. To breakthrough the coupling of randomness and nonlinearity is the essential issue. In this presentation, some advances and existing problems are outlined, including: (1) A new non-local macro-meso-scale damage model for damage and failure analysis of homogeneous and heterogenous quasi-brittle materials; (2) The generalized density evolution equation and dimension-reduced probability density evolution equation for the uncertainty propagation in high-dimensional nonlinear stochastic systems; and (3) uncertainty-informed reliability-based design optimization of concrete structures subjected to seismic actions. Existing problems to be studied will also be discussed.
