Rector

Lorenzo Casini has been the Rector of the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca since November 1, 2024.

After graduating with Honours in Law in 1999, he obtained a PhD in European and Comparative Administrative Law from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2004. He was a Research Fellow at the New York University (NYU) School of Law – Institute for International Law and Justice for the Global Administrative Law Project (2008-2009). In 2013, he also served as a Hauser Global Fellow and a Mauro Cappelletti Global Fellow in Comparative Law at NYU.

From 2002 to 2016, he taught Town Planning Law, Cultural Heritage Law and Administrative Law at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

From 2022 to 2025, Lorenzo Casini served as President of the Italian Serie A Professional Football League (Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A), while from 2019 to 2022 he was Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Culture. From 2014 to 2018, he was Legal Adviser to the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism and from 2009 to 2014 he served as Assistant to Justice Professor Sabino Cassese at the Constitutional Court.

Lorenzo Casini has authored numerous books and articles in the fields of public law, comparative and global administrative law, and cultural heritage law. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Constitutional Law, the Rivista trimestrale di diritto pubblico, and Aedon – Rivista di arti e diritto on line.

Since 2018, Lorenzo Casini has been Professor of Administrative Law at the National School of Administration of the Italian Government, where he also serves as scientific coordinator for the Law area and as co-academic director of the course-competition for State senior managers.

Moreover, he was Co-President of the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S) from 2018 to 2021 and currently serves as President of the Institute for Research on Public Administration (IRPA).
