Lucca Comics & Games 2026 - LEGACY: the 60th edition is set to begin
From 28 October to 1 November it will be Lucca's 60th, and the city is getting ready to celebrate its diamond anniversary together with Lucca Comics & Games. Never before has the local area been so much of a protagonist as in this "Legacy" edition: Lucca Crea and the Lucca City Council have gathered and channelled the city's enthusiasm, widening the festival's circle to new venues and opening it up to further collaborations.
THE ORIGINAL LUCCA60 POSTER STAYS IN LUCCA
The Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca is one of the festival's longstanding partners: the collaboration includes the significant role played by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the Auditorium in Piazza San Martino, venues for major exhibitions, presentations and author meetings during the festival days. Its constant support for the event was also evident at the Lucca Comics Awards in the "Changes" edition of the festival, with the Best Emerging Cartoonist award, as well as in the regular participation of its representative, Elizabeth Franchini, in the charity auctions organised by Area Performance, featuring works created live by celebrated illustrators and artists during the event.
This year the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, delighted to enrich its collection, has purchased the original artwork for the Lucca60 Legacy poster, created by the maestro Claudio Castellini. The work, which represents 60 years of the bond between Lucca and the world of comics, will therefore remain in Lucca. It will be on display during the festival as part of the exhibition Tocchi da maestro ("Master Strokes"), hosted at the Foundation's Palazzo delle Esposizioni, alongside other plates that trace the key stages in the career of the artist who, from Italy to the United States, has redefined the aesthetics of modern superheroes.
GO NAGAI CELEBRATION: "SUN, HEART AND STEEL"
Lucca Comics & Games pays tribute to Go Nagai, the Japanese author whose creations revolutionised the world of manga and anime and left an indelible mark on the collective imagination of an entire generation, with the experiential installation Sole, cuore e acciaio ("Sun, Heart and Steel"), hosted at the Foundation's Palazzo delle Esposizioni. The undisputed protagonists are the steel giants, such as the robots Mazinger Z and Grendizer (Goldrake). The former was a fundamental chapter in the evolution of the "mecha" genre in Japan; the latter became a phenomenon of popular culture in Italy, a symbol of an era and the bridgehead for the peaceful invasion of Japanese anime. After 1978 came many other robot creations much loved by Italian audiences, such as Jeeg, Great Mazinger and Getter Robo. From the robots we then move on to the sensei's masterpiece, Devilman. Sensei Nagai also boldly adapted Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy into a manga, demonstrating his unique expressive ability to build a bridge between classical literature and pop culture. For his provocative, unrestrained portrayal of the demons that dwell within man, the maestro was inspired by the edition of Dante's masterpiece illustrated by Gustave Doré. It was for this very work that he received the Pegaso for Culture, the highest honour of the Tuscany Region, presented to him in 2025 at Expo Osaka.
AREA PERFORMANCE AND FONDAZIONE MONASTERIO
Lucca Comics & Games' Area Performance is the space dedicated to live creativity, where art, comics and pop culture take shape through live painting, drawing, meetings and artistic performances. This year the area will be even more closely connected to the Carducci pavilion, which will host the stands of the artists taking part in the live painting activities.
The artists taking part include Alexis "Aleksi" Briclot, Ciruelo Cabral, Echo Chernik, Monte Moore, Jason Engle, Kowah Kowalski, Steve Argyle, Nigel Sade, Karl Kopinski, Jesper Eijsing and Silvia Corso, who will visit Area Performance throughout the event for live painting sessions. As usual, the works produced will be auctioned at the end of the event on 1 November (from 4 pm) at the Carducci pavilion. Part of the proceeds will go to the Fondazione Monasterio.
The Fondazione Monasterio brings to Lucca Comics & Games Frank Espinosa, illustrator of Aisha, the little blue monkey with the Bumbùm heart, chosen as the Foundation's official mascot and a symbol dedicated to the children in hospital at the Ospedale del Cuore in Massa. Aisha is the protagonist of the book written by Sandra von Borries and illustrated by Espinosa, created to accompany young patients with a story that conveys closeness, courage and positivity.
LEGACY: A UNIQUE EXHIBITION AT PALAZZO GUINIGI
To celebrate its sixty years, Lucca Comics & Games opens Lucca Legacy, a Comics & Games Story – The Exhibition in the historic Palazzo Guinigi: an exhibition project that presents the Festival not as an archive to be consulted, but as a living organism to be explored, changed and, in part, written together with the VisitAutori, as the event calls its audience. The exhibition is organised by Lucca Crea and POLI.design, the postgraduate training centre founded by the Politecnico di Milano, with the scientific supervision of DISEGS (Department of Socio-Economic, Managerial and Statistical Studies) of the Università degli Studi "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara, and with the participation of the Fondo Caniparoli, the Angelo Nencetti Collection "Quando Lucca diventò un fumetto" ("When Lucca Became a Comic") and the Fondo Bono of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. It has been produced with the support of the Comune di Lucca, in collaboration with Rai Teche as cultural partner, and thanks to the contribution of numerous collaborators who will take turns over time.
The idea is to tell the story of the Festival as a living organism: as in "legacy" games, the VisitAutori (the public) will be able to intervene physically in the exhibition and leave their own mark. The second floor of the palace thus becomes a permanent cultural platform, with adaptive displays designed to evolve over time. The public will be guided by the mascots Luke and Clea, created by Sergio Algozzino, with three ways to visit: the traditional room-by-room route, a paper game (the Check Point Legacy) with small missions to complete, or the dedicated app, which lets you step into the shoes of one of the two heroes.
The route is organised across three levels and several different environments.
Intro Level: the room of Luke and Clea, where visitors choose their mascot and their way of visiting.
Main Level, with the following rooms:
- Cover Stories: stories about the festival in LP format, with RFID tags that activate extra content.
- Time Machine: timelines that interweave history, the festival and pop culture, and a special way of viewing the historic posters. It also traces the graphic evolution of the poster, from David Pascal's cartooning (1969–1992) to the shift to painting in 2003 and then the annual theme.
- Tree of Strips: a tree bearing the names of hundreds of artists connected to the festival, and a station where you can have your photo taken and printed to leave on the wall of collective memories.
- Legacy Room: three stations with videos of voices and memories, which can also be updated with visitors' contributions, plus an in-depth look at "Worlds Born from Play".
- Roll of Honor: a "literary restaurant" with a menu of the comics and games awarded prizes over more than sixty years, to be chosen via moving plates, and display cases with collectors' rarities.
- Dreamers Room: a sensory and emotional experience that closes the Main Level.
Final section: the Hall of Games, where you play live with the box you chose earlier, and The Vault, the strongroom accessible according to precise rules: here visitors can deposit an object linked to the festival by filling in a museum record card. These objects may become new Cover Stories or join the nascent Museo del Fumetto di Lucca. The exhibition can be updated continually over time.
A very special challenge has also been launched: the call to action La mia Lucca ("My Lucca"), which has gathered stories from visitors, enthusiasts and artists about their first experience of the Festival, or their most significant one. A selection is being screened in the Legacy Room and will continue to be updated.
THE IMT SCHOOL IS SCIENTIFIC PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL
This year, too, the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is confirmed as Scientific Partner of Lucca Comics & Games. For the sixtieth edition of the fair, IMT is promoting numerous initiatives, which will take place at the IMT Library, in Piazza San Ponziano, and in the Cappella Guinigi of the Complesso di San Francesco. The School's events are organised around three thematic areas, "Game Science", "Comics Studies" and "Cultural Sciences", each linked to a strand of the School's scientific research. In particular, for five days the IMT Library will become the hub of Game Science: international research bodies and gaming associations will bring the spaces to life with interactive demos, game sessions and a rich programme of talks on the value and new frontiers of play.
During the festival, the IMT School joins the cultural programme with dedicated events and co-participation in meetings with game, comics and fiction authors on topical themes. The first events in the joint programme have been announced today:
"The Eternaut and Beyond: Comics, Memory and Collective Resistance", following the path traced by the Targa Oesterheld, which returns to Lucca Comics & Games after forty years and is dedicated to the memory of Héctor Germán Oesterheld, master of the masterpiece The Eternaut, who vanished into the mist of the Argentine military dictatorship together with his four daughters and the other 30,000 desaparecidos. "Geopolitica dei comics" ("Geopolitics of Comics"), meanwhile, is a focus on how comics today are one of the preferred languages for narrating current affairs and exploring conflicts and their complexities, thanks to a universal style capable of breaking down language barriers and prejudices. Finally, there is the "Neurocomics" project devised by Luca Raffaelli, which lands at the festival with a showcase in which Tanino Liberatore will draw live and under hypnosis, for which the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is considering an experiment.
AN IMPORTANT COLLABORATION WITH THE NATIONAL LIBRARY IN FLORENCE
Lucca Comics & Games is entering into an important collaboration with the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze, the institution responsible for the conservation, protection and promotion of ancient and modern collections, which gathers documents of cultural interest intended for public use, produced in any medium, in order to build the national archive of Italian publishing output. The Florentine institution holds the most important collection of periodicals and, in particular, a vast heritage of comics in Italy, including some 800,000 items from the recent donation of the collection of Gianni Bono, comics historian, scholar and publisher. Some of the objects and works to be displayed in the exhibition Lucca Legacy: a Comics & Games Story come from the Gianni Bono collection. Moreover, as a result of this collaboration, the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze will, from this year, begin preserving self-produced comics: the first volumes donated by the festival will be those shortlisted for the Premio Self Area 2026.
LUCCA COMICS & GAMES IN A GERONIMO STILTON STORY
Edizioni Piemme is celebrating with the festival through a special project, available exclusively during the event: a tribute from the much-loved journalist mouse, Geronimo Stilton, to the city and to the communities that take part in ever greater numbers each year.
Geronimo Stilton's whiskers are aquiver with excitement: he has been invited to the Teatro del Giglio for an important event marking the 60th anniversary of Lucca Comics & Games! On arriving in Lucca, he rushes into the historic centre to be on time for the appointment, but... he gets lost and has an incredible adventure through the city's streets! Between stops at the pavilions, sudden downpours and slaloming through the festive crowds, our hero will finally reach his destination, where a stratospheric audience awaits him, along with a special friend: Topolele Vietina! Geronimo Stilton, in fur and whiskers, will welcome the city's schoolchildren at the Auditorium San Romano on 28 October to kick off the celebrations. The story is a special project, not for sale, an exclusive collector's item available only at Lucca Comics & Games, from an idea by Elisabetta Dami.
PINO & SHINOBY – A BRIDGE BETWEEN ITALY AND JAPAN
The exhibition Pino & Shinoby: a Bridge between Italy and Japan, set up during the festival days in the Family Palace (Real Collegio), documents the making of the animated series co-produced by Studio Bozzetto and YTV, celebrating the meeting of the two cultures on the occasion of 160 years of relations between Italy and Japan. The exhibition is divided into four sections: the origins of the series, the development of the characters, the design of the settings, and an area devoted to music, conceived as a tool for teaching children simple words in Italian and Japanese. Following its world debut at Expo 2025 in Osaka and its win of the prestigious MOIGE Prize (Movimento Italiano Genitori), the public will be able to discover the behind-the-scenes story of this intercultural project.
LEGO ITALIA UNVEILS THE "TIME CAPSULE", TO BE REOPENED IN 2086
Lucca Comics & Games 2026 is enriched by a unique project: LEGO Italia lifts the curtain on the Time Capsule, the imposing brick installation set to become the emblem of the pavilion in LEGO® Square (Piazza San Romano). Designed and built entirely by LEGO® Certified Professional Master Builder Riccardo Zangelmi, the capsule is conceived to contain and preserve a selection of the LEGO® sets most loved by the public: the fans' favourite models, capable of evoking a special memory or an unforgettable moment. At the end of the festival, the piece will be sealed and donated to the city, and kept within the exhibition Lucca Legacy: a Comics & Games Story, with the aim of becoming part of the collection of the future Museo del Fumetto di Lucca. The 60th anniversary of the Tuscan event is a milestone that coincides with another important anniversary: 10 years since the opening of the first LEGO® Certified Store in Italy.
But which bricks will have the honour of making this journey through time to 2086, the year the Capsule is reopened? The community itself will decide: fans will be able to vote for their favourites in the LEGO® pop-up, playing a fundamental role in choosing which sets will tell today's passion to the builders of tomorrow. "LEGO Square" will thus be confirmed as the ideal meeting place for all enthusiasts. To mark this tenth anniversary, the LEGO pop-up will feature dedicated activities, exclusive gifts with purchases and LEGO® Insiders initiatives designed for the fan community, supported on the ground by outstanding partners such as MediaWorld, Toys Center with Play4Ever, Dadi & Mattoncini and Covo del Nerd.
ONE PIECE AND PRECURE: TOEI ANIMATION EUROPE TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN LUCCA
Toei Animation Europe confirms its presence with two of its best-loved titles, One Piece and PreCure, which will be at the centre of screenings, meetings and activities for the public, renewing its partnership with Europe's most eagerly awaited community event.
The Baluardo Santa Maria is confirmed as the home of One Piece, which this year will pay tribute to the Elbaph saga. The large pavilion dedicated to the series is being revamped with an even more experiential approach: activities, special photo opportunities and the traditional shop will accompany visitors into the world of the Straw Hat crew. The shop will feature exclusive products from Toei Animation and the Bandai Namco group.
For the first time, the One Piece experience will also extend to the official Lucca Comics & Games app, where it will be possible to activate a map layer dedicated exclusively to the property's official brand partners. Their stands will be marked on the virtual map, making it easier for fans to find the various One Piece-related products around the festival. One Piece will also have a space in the KIDS area, with activities and photo opportunities for younger visitors too, offering them an easy first introduction to the series.
For the fourth consecutive year, PreCure returns to Lucca Comics & Games, once again bringing the Western premiere of the film Star Detective PreCure – The Movie!, which will debut at the festival on Friday 30 October at the Astra cinema (repeated on 31 October at the Centrale) and will be introduced by the producer Hibiki Minagawa.
With Star Detective PreCure, Toei expands its presence at the Family Palace, where younger visitors can immerse themselves in the colourful universe of the series through photo opportunities and by solving the cases of the Curetto Agency. They will be able to meet the special mascot who has come straight from Japan, PetitCure Mofurun, in its own dedicated space. The double stand will also host exclusive brand products from the Pretty Store in Tokyo. The PetitCure Mofurun costume character will be present from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November in the PreCure area of the Family Palace.
CHRIS RIDDELL: FROM IDEAS TO DRAWING. HOW A CHARACTER IS BORN
The major international guest will be Chris Riddell, one of the most important contemporary authors and illustrators for children and adults. The author, present in collaboration with the publisher Il Castoro, will be at the centre of panels, workshops, showcases and signings throughout the festival, and for the occasion will also hold a special event for schools, which sold out after only a week: Inventiamo insieme mondi fantastici! ("Let's Invent Fantasy Worlds Together!"), a drawing and story-creation workshop organised as part of Lucca Junior, at the Family Palace (Thursday 29/10, 10.30 am, Real Collegio).
During the session, Chris Riddell will guide children through the discovery of how a character is born and how, through drawing and imagination, a story can take shape. Starting from an original deck of illustrated cards of his own, the author will draw live and involve participants in creating new characters, places and fantasy worlds, encouraging them to develop their own ideas through drawing and free storytelling. The workshop will end with a moment of sharing the work produced and a question-and-answer session with the author, giving the children the chance to talk directly with Chris Riddell and get to know more about his work as an illustrator and storyteller, known throughout the world for his books.
SAINT SEIYA (KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC): BURN YOUR COSMO, 13 STARS!
To mark the 40th anniversary of the epic Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) saga, following the much-acclaimed exhibition at Lucca Collezionando, Lucca Comics & Games celebrates the epic created by Masami Kurumada with a panel dedicated to the anime that has made several generations dream. The protagonists are some of the saga's leading voice actors: Ivo De Palma (Pegasus), Luigi Rosa (Cygnus), Andrea De Nisco (Andromeda) and Dania Cericola (Lady Isabel/the goddess Athena). For all fans, the date is 31 October, at 7 pm at the Auditorium San Romano.
The event will be preceded by the parade SAINT SEIYA THE GATHERING: at 6 pm, cosplayers from all over Italy dressed as Knights of the Zodiac will gather in Piazza San Michele and "escort" the voice actors to the Auditorium San Romano, where a guard of honour will be formed before the meeting begins.
THE WINNERS OF CARTOONS ON THE BAY 2026 COME TO LUCCA
The collaboration between Cartoons on the Bay, the International Animation and Transmedia Festival promoted by Rai and organised by Rai Com, and Lucca Comics & Games grows ever stronger. If in May the 30th-anniversary edition of the Rai festival, directed by Adriano Monti Buzzetti, hosted in Pescara the exhibition Oltre le Terre di Mezzo: visioni tolkeniane di Angelo Montanini ("Beyond Middle-earth: Tolkienian Visions by Angelo Montanini"), staged in collaboration with Lucca Comics & Games, in October, for the first time, the winning works from COTB will be screened in Lucca.
The programme features the works awarded prizes at the Aurum in Pescara, from the United Kingdom and United States, Italy and Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic and France. The 2026 winners are My Friend Maisy, directed by Beth Hughes, awarded Best Preschool TV Show; E.B. White's Charlotte's Web by Yurie Rocha (Best Upper Preschool TV Show); Try Not to Laugh – Prova a non ridere by Pera Toons (Best Kids TV Show); Tales from Outer Suburbia by Noel Cleary and Shaun Tan (Best Youth TV Show); Koira by Ben Lega (Best Interactive Animation); Tales from the Magic Garden by Patrik Pass Jr., Jean-Claude Rozec, David Súkup and Leon Vidmar (Best Animated Feature); and The Nest by Aurélien Coquery, Léa Kermanach, Soline Mauguin, Abel Tixador, Jean Baounon and Romane Selter-Fiette. Screenings will take place all day from 28 October to 1 November on the first floor of the Real Collegio, Family Palace, in the Lucca Junior area.
DAMIANO CARRARA: BETWEEN VIDEO GAMES AND SWEET CREATIONS
Damiano Carrara and his atelier return to celebrate Lucca60 together. After the monumental dragon for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, and Lady Hope displayed in the splendid setting of Palazzo Ducale, Lucca's maître pâtissier will take on the creation of a tribute to the Yellow Kid, the historic symbol of the Legacy of Lucca Comics & Games. The maestro will also make a special birthday cake for sensei Go Nagai, the Festival's guest of honour. He will also be at the festival for the whole Lucca Comics & Games community, who will be able to enjoy his delicious treats, as well as paying homage once again to "Luke & Clea" with new sweet creations. Last year, in fact, Carrara made two large chocolate statues of the protagonists of the festival's official video game. This year it is Lucca Comics & Games that is paying tribute to Carrara, making him, to all intents and purposes, part of Lucca's gaming community and turning him into one of the characters in the game, which can be downloaded free of charge for iOS and Android.
ISTITUTO MUSICALE LUIGI BOCCHERINI: A GROWING COLLABORATION
The collaboration between the festival and the Luigi Boccherini music conservatoire is becoming ever more significant: students and lecturers on the MAI & GAMES Master's (Music Applied to Image) took part in creating the music for Luke & Clea: A Quest for Legacy, the event's official video game, which has been available free online for a few days. Now, for the first time, in addition to its auditorium, the Lucca conservatoire is opening some of its most evocative rooms to events on the programme. The Boccherini thus becomes "the home" of Fantasy and Romance literature. Talks, meetings and themed activities will be set here, with a more intimate audience.
The "Incontri al tramonto" ("Sunset Meetings"), three aperitifs dedicated to fantasy, creatures and passion, will be held here, and the "Concerto in Arte" will celebrate the illustrator Paolo Barbieri's thirty years of career together with music from the Conservatoire. In the same setting, "Lucca60Love" will be born: Sunday 1 November, a day dedicated to romance, from contemporary to queer romance, from romantasy to dark. Some of the spaces will also become a unique setting for live-action role-playing activities.
The auditorium will also host top-level events, such as on Saturday 31st (10 am), when it will host the public interview on her career with the great Yōko Kanno, who will be at Lucca Comics & Games to meet fans and be celebrated as a legend of anime, video game, film and television soundtracks deserves. The Boccherini Institute's collaboration will also be expressed on 1 November (3 pm) with the event dedicated to the artist at the Teatro del Giglio Giacomo Puccini.
AGORÀ CIVIC LIBRARY: HOME OF THE SELF AREA
The Biblioteca Civica Agorà will once again host the Self Area of Lucca Comics & Games, dedicated to self-produced works and independent comics. The festival will in fact be preceded by the Self Area Go project, with three meetings organised in collaboration with the Biblioteca Civica: on 6 October (6 pm) a focus on independent video games with Fabio Viola and the creators of "Luke&Clea" and of the association TheHandyCapped; on 13 October (6 pm) a meeting with the TheSign Academy of Florence and the InkCap collective on the importance of specialist schools. During the festival, representatives of the Biblioteca Agorà and of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze will discuss the need to preserve independent and self-produced works too. In addition, Lucca Crea has once again this year donated to the Biblioteca Agorà a selection of comics, manga and graphic novels from among the titles nominated for the prestigious Lucca Comics Awards and the Community Awards: the donation expands the catalogue of works available for lending and consultation, together with those donated by the Fondazione Tuono Pettinato for the shelf of the same name and the volumes shortlisted for the Premio Self Area.
AREA PRO, WHERE DREAMS MEET OPPORTUNITY
Area Pro is a place, or rather an opportunity! The festival has always promoted encounters between rising comics talents and publishers, in a dedicated space where young people can present their aspirations to publishers. This year the number of publishing houses taking part rises to as many as 32, with the "first-timers" including illustrious names from the comics scene such as Bao Publishing, the magazine La fine del Mondo from Il Manifesto, Mirage Comics together with Shockdom Edizioni, Tora Edizioni, Grizzly Lab and Edizioni Nuove Sido, all looking for more experimental productions, for a total of over 60 portfolio review sessions. Area Pro returns to Palazzo Guinigi, on the ground floor, where it found a home last year. Aspiring comics artists, scriptwriters and colourists can apply by sending in their portfolio free of charge until 13 October. Also at Palazzo Guinigi, in the new meeting room on the first floor, the "incontri pro" will be held: genuine masterclasses, free of charge, on how to present yourself at your best in the creative industries. Link to apply: https://lucca2026.luccacomicsandgames.com/it/news/area-pro-2026
"CONSTRUCTING KINDNESS IN LIFE": AN AWARD FOR LUCCA COMICS & GAMES
This year the Festival is honoured with the "Costruiamo Gentilezza nella Vita" ("Constructing Kindness in Life") Award on the occasion of its 60 years of activity. The award has been given to the event for its ability to unite and engage people in the name of positive values, respect and empathy. The prize grew out of "Costruiamo Gentilezza nello Sport" ("Constructing Kindness in Sport"), devised by the journalist Gaia Simonetti to celebrate small gestures in the world of sport, and is now extended to all areas of society.
Lucca Comics & Games stands out as a human space of good initiative, showing how the culture of play and comics can be transformed into a tangible expression of collective kindness. It thus joins a roll of honour that includes figures such as Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Niccolò Fabi, Paolo Ruffini, Nicolò Govoni and Fiorella Mannoia. Because recognising kindness means increasing it, and every shared gesture helps build more united and supportive communities.
